Khosla Ventures joins AI-driven biotech firm’s $47m series A
Somite AI, a biotechnology company focused on AI tools for human cell therapy, has raised US$47 million in a series A funding round.
Key investors include Khosla Ventures, SciFi Ventures, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Fusion Fund, and Pitango HealthTech.
The funding brings Somite AI’s total capital to US$60 million, which will support the development of its DeltaStem platform to improve therapeutic cell production.
DeltaStem uses proprietary capsule technology to collect large-scale data on cell transitions, helping create more effective cell differentiation protocols.
Investor Vinod Khosla and new board member Fidji Simo believe Somite AI’s platform can address the cost and unpredictability challenges in cell therapy.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI-driven regenerative medicine represents a burgeoning economic frontier
The fusion of AI with biotechnology reflects an increasingly valuable market opportunity that extends beyond Somite AI’s recent funding.
AI’s overall contribution to the global economy is projected to reach $15.7 trillion by 2030, exceeding the combined output of China and India 1.
Within this larger trend, the market for synthetic biology specifically is forecast to exceed $12.5 billion by 2024, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 20% 1.
Somite AI’s funding is part of a broader pattern in 2025’s biotech investment landscape, where investors increasingly favor platforms with validated targets and strong biomarker evidence, as demonstrated by other major fundraising rounds like NewLimit’s $130 million Series B for liver-rejuvenating mRNA medicine 2.
The cost to sequence a human genome has plummeted from $3 billion in 2001 to approximately $1,000 today, creating the data-rich environment necessary for AI applications in regenerative medicine to flourish 1.
2️⃣ Cell therapy development faces unique challenges that AI aims to solve
Somite AI’s approach addresses fundamental obstacles that have historically limited cell therapy advancement.
Currently, 40 regenerative medicine therapies using AI are in development globally, with three having reached Phase II clinical trials, demonstrating the growing integration of AI in this field 3.
