Khosla Ventures eyes record $5.5b startup fund: sources

Khosla Ventures is in talks to raise as much as US$5.5 billion for new funds focused mainly on young startups, according to people familiar with the matter.

The firm is considering about US$1 billion for seed-stage startups, US$2 billion for venture, or early-stage, startups, and US$2.5 billion for an opportunity fund for more mature startups. The targets could still change as fundraising talks continue.

If completed, the raise would be Khosla Ventures’ largest fundraise in its two-decade history. The firm’s last set of funds totalled around US$4 billion last year.

Khosla Ventures was OpenAI’s first outside investor. The firm has also backed other AI startups, including Cognition, Sakana AI, and Physical Intelligence.

A spokesperson for Khosla Ventures declined to comment.
