Khosla Ventures backs US defense tech startup’s $100m raise

Mach Industries, a defense tech startup founded in 2023 by Ethan Thornton, has raised US$100 million in new funding, boosting its valuation to US$470 million.

The round was led by Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures and Geoff Lewis of Bedrock Capital, with participation from Sequoia.

This brings the company’s total funding to US$185 million.

The previous series A round in October 2023 raised US$79 million at a US$335 million valuation.

The company has developed three weapons systems: a jet-powered UAV, a high-altitude glider, and an in-air satellite with sensors and communication tools.

It also secured contracts with the Army Applications Laboratory for a vertical takeoff precision cruise missile.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Defense tech venture funding is experiencing a historic surge

Mach’s $100 million round represents part of a significant larger trend in defense tech investing that’s gaining momentum.

Venture funding for defense tech startups reached a record $3 billion in 2024, marking an 11% increase from $2.7 billion in 2023 and surpassing the previous record of $2.6 billion set in 2022 1.

While the number of deals has fluctuated (increasing from 100 to 102 between 2023-2024 but down from 113 in 2022), the rising total funding indicates larger average deal sizes and more concentrated investments in promising companies 2.

This surge is driven by increasing geopolitical tensions and rising demand for innovation from defense customers and Congress, creating an environment where young companies like Mach can secure substantial funding despite modest valuation increases 3.

Mach’s funding is still dwarfed by industry leaders like Anduril, which raised $1.5 billion in 2024, and Helsing, valued at $5.4 billion, showing how the defense tech funding ecosystem is developing tiers of companies at different scales 2.

2️⃣ Youth-led innovation is reshaping traditional defense contracting

Mach Industries exemplifies a new generation of defense startups led by young entrepreneurs bringing fresh perspectives to an industry traditionally dominated by established contractors.
