Keppel to sell its subsidiary M1 to Simba Telecom for $778m

Keppel will receive S$1 billion (US$778 million) from selling the telecom operations of its 83.9%-owned subsidiary M1 to Simba Telecom.

The deal values M1’s telecom business at S$1.4 billion (US$1.1 billion).

Keppel will retain M1’s information and communications technology arm, which covers data centers and subsea cables.

It expects an accounting loss of S$222 million (US$172.8 million) from the transaction.

Simba Telecom, wholly owned by Australia-listed Tuas, submitted the top bid among several parties.

Tuas plans to raise at least AU$416 million (US$271 million) through a placement and share purchase plan.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Asset monetization accelerates corporate transformation in mature markets

Keppel’s M1 sale demonstrates how established conglomerates use strategic divestitures to reshape their business focus rather than simply raise cash.

This transaction is part of Keppel’s broader $14.4 billion asset monetization strategy since 2020, with the company already realizing $4.6 billion in asset sales to transform into a focused asset manager1.

The financial impact shows immediate results. Keppel’s return on equity improved from 13.2% in the first half of 2024 to 15.4% in the same period of 2025, while free cash flow jumped from a $384 million outflow in 2023 to $901 million positive in 20241.

By retaining M1’s fast-growing ICT businesses including data centers and subsea cables while divesting the traditional telecom operations, Keppel demonstrates selective portfolio optimization rather than wholesale exit strategies.

This approach allows companies to maintain exposure to high-growth segments while shedding capital-intensive, lower-margin operations that no longer align with their strategic vision.

2️⃣ Market disruption through aggressive pricing creates consolidation opportunities

Simba’s rapid subscriber growth illustrates how new entrants can quickly gain market share in seemingly saturated telecom markets through disruptive pricing strategies.
