Kakao struggles with ongoing unit selloff rumors

Kakao is facing challenges amid growing speculation about selling stakes in its subsidiaries. The company denied the reports but confirmed that discussions about its affiliates are ongoing.

Kakao Entertainment’s co-CEOs said recent reports of a potential sale were “misrepresented.”

They explained that talks are happening regarding changes in financial investors’ shareholding structure, but no decisions have been made.

Reports said Kakao approached major shareholders of Kakao Entertainment, including Anchor Equity Partners and Tencent.

Kakao Entertainment, 66% owned by Kakao, posted a net loss of 259.1 billion won (US$180.58 million) in 2024, raising concerns about its financial stability.

Kakao Mobility is also under scrutiny, with VIG Partners reportedly eyeing a 40% stake. This could affect Kakao’s 57.2% share and management control.

Speculation about selling Kakao’s web portal Daum continues, though CEO Chung Shin-a denied such plans. Kakao’s labor union urged protections against selling platforms that handle sensitive user data.

The company said in a regulatory filing that “nothing has been finalized.”

1️⃣ Kakao’s expansion strategy shows the challenges of digital conglomerate diversification

Kakao’s current struggles reflect the growing pains of a rapidly expanded digital conglomerate that’s now reassessing its portfolio.

From its formation through the merger of Daum Communications and Kakao Inc. in 2014, the company has aggressively expanded beyond its core messaging service into numerous business areas 1.

Most notably, Kakao made a major entertainment push by acquiring a 76.4% stake in LOEN Entertainment for $1.5 billion in 2016 1, a division that’s now posting significant losses (259.1 billion won in 2023).

Despite growing overall corporate revenue to a projected 7.87 trillion won ($5.8 billion) in 2024 2, Kakao now appears to be reconsidering its sprawling structure amid poor performance in certain divisions.

This pattern illustrates how tech platforms often face diminishing returns when expanding too far from their core competencies, especially in capital-intensive entertainment businesses that require different expertise than messaging platforms.
