Kakao Mobility launches first robot valet parking service

Kakao Mobility has launched Korea’s first robot valet parking service at the Chungbuk Content Enterprise Promotion Center in Cheongju, in partnership with HL Robotics, North Chungcheong Province, and Chungbuk Innovation Institute of Science & Technology.

Kakao Mobility is a South Korea-based company offering mobility services such as ride-hailing and parking solutions.

The trial service uses HL Robotics’ Parkie robot to lift and transport cars to assigned parking spots after drivers register at a kiosk and leave their vehicles in a designated area.

Drivers can request their car via a link sent through KakaoTalk, with notifications sent once the vehicle is ready for pickup.

The robot valet is currently limited to employees who register in advance, with plans to expand access.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Kakao’s robot valet trial is constrained by current rules pending parking law revisions

  • Kakao Mobility says its robot valet needs a “separate robot valet zone” because current rules treat parking robots as mechanical parking facilities.
  • MOLIT expects to revise the Parking Lot Act around 2030 to relax external lot requirements for autonomous driving, so broad changes may take years to reach daily sites 1.
  • This gap keeps rollouts inside marked areas, which slows near-term business use despite working tech.

Korean parking lot operators and tech vendors can tap a $12.16 billion global parking management market via retrofit partnerships

  • The global parking management system market could reach $12.16 billion by 2034, with East Asia at 38.4% of revenue 2.
  • Off-street sites lead worldwide and could reach $9.47 billion by 2034 2. That invites Korean owners to team with vendors for IoT sensors, AI analytics, or automation.
  • Cloud-based parking-as-a-service can cut operations and maintenance costs for facilities by 40 to 60% versus on-premises systems, which suits sites upgrading ahead of rule shifts 3.
