Kakao Mobility, HD Hyundai team on autonomous logistics

Kakao Mobility and HD Hyundai XiteSolution, a South Korea-based construction equipment maker, signed an MOU to build an autonomous logistics platform for warehouses and other facilities.

Kakao Mobility will provide fleet control and transport management software.

HD Hyundai XiteSolution will supply autonomous industrial vehicles, including unmanned forklifts and other site automation equipment.

The companies said they will run proof-of-concept trials at operating logistics sites.

They also aim to develop a single system to manage automated guided vehicles and autonomous mobile robots, extending Kakao Mobility’s work in robot delivery and automated valet parking into industrial logistics.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The partnership moves Kakao Mobility beyond a ride-hailing business under pressure

  • Kakao Mobility is moving into industrial logistics after heavy pressure in ride-hailing, where it had a 96% market share in 2022 1.
  • South Korea’s antitrust watchdog fined the company US$10.5 million for blocking rivals from access to its taxi app 1.
  • The expansion tackles a problem that has followed the company since its 2017 spin-off, finding steady profit beyond building a huge user base 2.
  • The deal lets Kakao Mobility apply its software know-how in a market with less scrutiny and firmer income sources 3.

The plan could create one software layer for logistics

  • This partnership aims to build one platform that pulls equipment and data into a single system 3.
  • The companies want to cut slowdowns caused by disconnected data across ordering, transport, and warehouse work 3.
  • It could place Kakao Mobility at the center of software that runs autonomous machines such as unmanned forklifts and mobile robots, with shared data plus controls 3.
  • If it works, the model could help other consumer software companies move into industrial markets where software guides operations more than hardware does 3.
