Kakao Bank posts record 2025 profit on fee-based growth

Kakao Bank reported a record net profit of 480.3 billion won (US$690 million) in 2025, with noninterest income reaching 1.1 trillion won (US$757.2 million) for the first time, driven by fee-based services and platform businesses.

The bank’s total operating revenue rose to 3.1 trillion won (US$2.1 billion), while interest income slightly declined to 2.95 trillion won (US$2 billion) due to slower loan growth.

The company added 1.8 million users, bringing its total customer base to 26.7 million, with about 20 million active monthly users.

Kakao Bank plans to introduce new services, including an investment search feature and a foreign exchange account, in the second quarter.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Record profit masks headwinds from regulation and rising costs

  • Kakao Bank is leaning more on noninterest income to ease pressure on its lending-focused business.
  • Government rules limited household loan growth, while lower market rates pushed third-quarter net interest margin to 1.81% 1.
  • Costs are also rising. SG&A (selling, general and administrative expenses) climbed 17% year-over-year in the third quarter due to higher spending on labor, IT, and marketing 1.
  • These conditions suggest the move also aims to cushion the impact of regulation and expenses, rather than coming only from organic growth 2.

A new approach to digital bank expansion is taking shape in Southeast Asia

  • Work in Thailand and Indonesia points to a lower-cost model that leans on partners, which other fintechs may copy.
  • Rather than building end to end, it works with SCB X Public Company Limited (SCBX) in Thailand for market access and WeBank Technology Services, an affiliate of China’s WeBank, for infrastructure 3.
  • That setup lets Kakao Bank spend more energy on user-friendly product design plus front-end development to draw customers.
  • The mix of local licenses, proven tech, and customer-facing know-how from separate partners could speed digital banking uptake in emerging markets 4.
