A US federal judge has denied DJI’s request to be removed from a Department of Defense (DoD) list of Chinese military companies.

Judge Paul Friedman said the DoD presented “substantial evidence” that DJI contributes to China’s defense sector, citing modified DJI drones used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He noted that DJI’s said bans on military use do not change the drones’ military applications, though he dismissed some of the DoD’s other arguments.

DJI, a China-based drone maker, was added to the DoD list in 2022. Other US agencies, including the Commerce and Treasury departments, have also placed the company on similar lists.

DJI argued in its lawsuit that it is not owned or controlled by the Chinese military and said the listing caused financial and reputational harm.
