Judge extends Google deadline in Epic Games dispute to Oct 29

A US federal judge has extended Google’s deadline to comply with a permanent injunction in its legal dispute with Epic Games from October 22 to October 29.

The injunction requires Google to change its app store policies, allowing developers to set their own prices and use alternative billing systems.

Both companies jointly requested the extension, though the reason was not disclosed.

The order was signed by Judge James Donato on October 20.

Google has said it will comply while pursuing an appeal and is expected to file to the US Supreme Court by October 27.

The injunction follows court rulings in favor of Epic Games over Google’s app store practices.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Enforcement moves to October 29; specifics still pending

  • judge Donato’s permanent injunction (a binding court order; Multi-District Litigation (MDL) Dkt. No. 1017) takes effect October 29. Epic and Google have not filed the joint implementation plan due October 30 (a court-required filing that explains how the order will be carried out). So steering (directing users to pay outside the app), user disclosures, and geographic scope such as US-only or global are unclear 12.
  • Epic and Google sought a one-week delay. The order gives no reason, which hints at talks not yet public.
  • Google plans to seek Supreme Court relief by October 27, which could trigger a stay (a temporary pause) shortly before enforcement. The timeline carries risk for Android developers selling to US users.

Payment firms and subscription platforms should prepare plans for high revenue US Android apps

  • Alternative payment processors (companies that handle credit card and other payments) should move fast if the order allows out-of-app payment steering with no Google fee 3. Subscription management platforms (tools for recurring billing, entitlements, and churn) can package migration kits for top apps.
  • Gaming and dating (Tinder) stand out. Streaming such as Disney+ and Max (Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service) matters. Cloud storage with Google One (Google’s cloud storage subscription) fits. These apps could cut platform fees (app store commissions) by steering users to direct payments 3.
  • Companies in growth or checkout tooling (providers of user acquisition, analytics, payment SDKs, and subscription infrastructure) should prepare compliance-ready integration kits.
