J&T Express launches largest logistics hub in southern China

J&T Express has launched its largest logistics hub to date, the Greater Bay Area Digital Supply Chain Industrial Park, in southern China.

The new facility spans 65 acres and can process over 15 million parcels daily, with advanced automation covering about 90% of its operations.

J&T Express, a logistics company operating across Southeast Asia, China, and other markets, said the hub will help manage demand during the Double 11 shopping festival.

The site includes a 50,000-square-meter warehouse, automated sorting systems, and technology for real-time monitoring and scheduling.

Green features include a solar panel installation projected to generate 7.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, and a rainwater management system for water reuse.

The facility also supports cross-border logistics and ecommerce distribution, aiming to boost efficiency in the region’s supply chain.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

J&T’s 15 million capacity suits peaks in a huge China parcel market

  • China processed 150 billion parcels in 2024, averaging over 410 million daily, with peak periods exceeding 729 million per day 1. J&T’s 15 million daily hub capacity represents 3-4% of typical daily volume and 2% of peak shipments.
  • J&T handled 19.8 billion parcels in China during 2024 with 11.3% market share 2, which puts average throughput at 54 million parcels per day. The new hub’s 15 million capacity targets seasonal spikes like Double 11 (China’s Nov. 11 shopping festival).
  • The hub sits in the Greater Bay Area (the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau region) with a cross-border brief, and China’s cross-border market is projected to reach £268 billion in 2025 3.

Greater Bay Area cross-border growth fuels logistics tech demand

  • China runs 105 cross-border ecommerce pilot zones 3. These government-designated areas use bonded warehouses (storage where duties are deferred) to streamline customs, and the hub’s setup fits here with scope for customs declaration automation plus tariff (import duty) calculators.
  • Orders under Renminbi (RMB) 5,000 are tariff-exempt, while annual purchases under RMB 26,000 get a 30% VAT cut 3. This adds checkout complexity that needs payment tools plus compliance checks at scale.
  • Automation covers 90% of hub operations. That drives demand for integration middleware (software that connects disparate systems) linking warehouse management systems with platforms like Tmall Global (Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace; 50.8% market share) and JD Worldwide (JD.com’s cross-border marketplace; 15.9% share) 3 for real-time inventory plus order sync.
