JPMorgan debuts deposit token on Coinbase-linked network
JP Morgan Chase has launched JPM Coin, a deposit token for institutional clients, expanding its reach in digital assets.
The token represents US dollar deposits and enables users to send and receive money via Base, a public blockchain linked to Coinbase, according to Naveen Mallela, global co-head of JP Morgan’s blockchain division.
Transactions can now be processed in seconds and at any time, instead of only during business hours.
The rollout follows a trial involving Mastercard, Coinbase, and B2C2.
JP Morgan plans to make the token available to clients’ customers and add other currencies, pending regulatory approval.
JPM Coin will also serve as collateral on Coinbase.
Deposit tokens are digital coins issued by banks and backed by customer deposits, differing from stablecoins, which are usually backed by other liquid assets.
JP Morgan’s Kinexys Digital Payments network processes over US$3 billion a day, far below the US$10 trillion daily volume of its traditional payments business.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
JPM Coin on Base remains permissioned
- JPM Coin now runs on Base, a public blockchain linked to Coinbase, but transfers stay permissioned for approved institutions, not freely tradable like typical crypto assets 1.
- The token represents bank deposits held at JPMorgan, unlike many stablecoins such as USD Coin (USDC) that sit in segregated reserves, which gives it a different risk and governance model 21.
- The rollout awaits regulatory approval for wider access plus more currencies, and JPMorgan has not fully shared eligibility rules or transfer limits 3.
- JPMorgan is positioning this to compete with the stablecoin market by offering a regulated alternative that keeps traditional banking intermediation 3.
Payment processors can use deposit tokens for instant B2B settlement
- Treasury management platforms (software used by corporate finance teams to manage cash) and corporate payment providers can route on-chain payments with JPM Coin’s instant 24/7 settlement on Base 1.
- JPMorgan settled a Siemens digital commercial paper (short-term corporate debt) transaction in 93 seconds using the private JPM Coin System (JPMorgan’s permissioned blockchain) and SWIAT (a tokenized-assets market infrastructure backed by European banks), which hints at faster workflows for corporate treasury teams 4.
- Payment facilitators (companies that let merchants accept payments under a master account) must finish JPMorgan’s whitelisting and learn Base integration specs before shaping product plans 1.
- Cross-border payment providers that serve institutions should test if deposit token rails beat correspondent banking (using intermediary banks to move money across borders) on cost in select corridors, as JPMorgan plans multi-currency expansion pending regulatory approval 3.
