🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Jollibee’s journey from local hero to regional powerhouse

Jollibee’s rapid Southeast Asian expansion represents a remarkable evolution from its humble beginnings as an ice cream parlor that pivoted to fast food in 1978 in response to customer demand for hot meals 1.

The company has transformed into a formidable competitor against global giants, becoming the top food brand in Southeast Asia in 2024 with an overall score of 67.35%, surpassing McDonald’s and KFC 2.

This regional dominance mirrors its home market success, where Jollibee generated approximately $2.36 billion in sales in 2023, nearly double McDonald’s $1.2 billion in the Philippines 3.

The brand’s expansion strategy reflects a deliberate approach that began by targeting areas with large Filipino populations before shifting focus to mainstream consumers in high-growth markets like Vietnam, where it now operates over 200 stores with almost entirely Vietnamese customer bases 45.

This transformation exemplifies how a local brand can successfully compete against established global players by leveraging strong brand identity while adapting to regional preferences.

2️⃣ Menu localization as a competitive advantage in Southeast Asia

Jollibee’s success across Southeast Asia demonstrates how effective menu localization can drive growth in diverse markets with different taste preferences.

While the brand maintains its flagship Chickenjoy fried chicken—recognized by publications like USA Today as “Best Fried Chicken”—it strategically adapts offerings with innovations like Chili Chicken in Vietnam and Spicy Spaghetti in Malaysia 5.
