Johnson Controls, a US-based building systems and thermal management company, said on September 28 that it joined the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed 2.0, hosted by the College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore.

The collaboration will study AI-ready data centers in tropical conditions as Singapore expands its low-carbon digital infrastructure.

The company said it will contribute thermal management, smart controls, engineering, and operational expertise to test whether existing data center infrastructure can support more computing while cutting power and water use.

Johnson Controls said a modeled design could lower non-information-technology energy use by up to 50% vs. conventional cooling methods.

In a separate 1-gigawatt data center blueprint, its absorption chiller reference design could enable up to 97 MW of additional AI computing capacity from existing power infrastructure.

The design also reduced cooling-related electrical demand by up to 44%.

The findings are intended to help inform future data center designs in Singapore and other tropical markets.
