Jio Financial launches tax filing feature as rival cuts staff
Jio Financial Services has launched a tax planning and filing feature on its JioFinance app, with self-service options starting at 24 rupee (US$0.3).
The module, developed with TaxBuddy, offers DIY and expert-assisted tax filing, plus tools for comparing tax regimes, mapping deductions, and evaluating housing rent allowances.
This comes during India’s peak tax season, with the government extending the filing deadline for most non-audit taxpayers to September 15, 2025.
Meanwhile, the rival company, Clear, formerly ClearTax, has cut its workforce by 16%, affecting about 145 employees as part of a restructuring effective August 1. The company cited strategic changes for the reduction.
Clear reported a 93% rise in FY24 operating revenue to 209.8 crore rupee (US$24 million) and a 59% drop in losses to 96.2 crore rupee (US$11 million), though it has not raised new capital since October 2021.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Strong revenue growth doesn’t guarantee job security in competitive fintech markets
Clear’s recent workforce reduction illustrates how companies can cut staff even during periods of strong financial performance.
Despite reporting a 93% increase in operating revenue to Rs 209.84 crore for FY24 and reducing losses by nearly 59%, the company laid off 16% of its workforce in August 20251.
The timing proved particularly striking, as these cuts happened during India’s peak tax filing season when demand for tax services typically surges2.
Clear’s situation reflects broader challenges in the fintech space, where companies struggle to balance growth investments with profitability pressures. The company hasn’t secured new funding since October 2021, which likely contributed to the restructuring decision despite improved financial metrics3.
This example shows how revenue growth alone may not sustain workforce levels when companies face funding constraints or need to optimize operations for long-term sustainability.
2️⃣ Market entry timing can provide significant competitive advantages in seasonal businesses
Jio’s decision to launch its tax filing service during peak season demonstrates strategic market timing that leverages both seasonal demand and competitor vulnerabilities.
The company entered the market with aggressive pricing at Rs 24 just as Clear was reducing its workforce capacity4. This timing allows Jio to capture market share when competitor service levels may be compromised and customer acquisition costs are typically lower due to high seasonal demand.
