JD.com’s logistic arm debuts self-driving van

JD Logistics, the logistics arm of Chinese ecommerce giant JD.com, has launched an autonomous light truck called JD Logistics VAN.

The JD Logistics VAN has a cargo capacity of 24 cubic meters and a full-load range of up to 400 kilometers. It features Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, allowing it to navigate complex traffic environments and avoid obstacles.

The vehicle is intended for high-frequency logistics scenarios, including e-commerce warehousing, package sorting, manufacturing supply chains, and cold chain transportation. JD Logistics estimates that the VAN could reduce transportation costs by 60% compared to conventional methods. It also aims to improve operational efficiency.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Autonomous delivery vehicles represent decades of evolution, not overnight innovation

JD Logistics’ autonomous van continues a journey that began nearly 50 years ago with early prototypes like the Stanford Cart (1961) and the Tsukuba Mechanical Laboratory’s vehicle (1977), which pioneered computer vision for navigation 1.

The progression toward commercial viability accelerated with Ernst Dickmanns’ “dynamic vision” technology in 1987 and subsequent competitions like the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2004, which catalyzed modern autonomous vehicle development 2.

In the logistics sector specifically, Otto (acquired by Uber) completed the first commercial autonomous truck delivery in 2016 – a 120-mile beer run that demonstrated the technology’s real-world potential 3.

JD’s entry with Level 4 autonomy represents a critical shift from experimental to practical application, following a pattern where technical capabilities advance from controlled environments to complex real-world scenarios like public roads.

The 24 cubic meter cargo capacity and 400km range address specific logistics requirements that earlier prototypes couldn’t meet, illustrating how autonomous technology is now being optimized for specific commercial applications rather than general demonstrations.

2️⃣ Economic pressures drive autonomous vehicle adoption in logistics

JD Logistics’ claim of 60% cost reduction aligns with industry projections. McKinsey research indicates that autonomous technology could reduce total cost of ownership for heavy-duty trucks by 42% per mile 4.

The autonomous delivery market is responding directly to the worsening driver shortage in logistics, with the US alone facing a deficit of over 80,000 truck drivers, expected to double by 2030 4.

Cost advantages come from multiple sources: elimination of driver wages, optimized routing that reduces fuel consumption, and continuous operation without mandatory rest periods required by human drivers.

China and the US show different autonomous truck economics, with fuel costs in China higher due to taxes, while Level 4 electric trucks demonstrate significant differences in energy costs between the two markets 5.
