JD.com unveils robotics plan, aims to invest $1.5b

JD.com, the Beijing-based Chinese ecommerce and logistics company, said on August 19 it had introduced a robotics strategy focused on supply chain, services, and technology.

By 2028, the company plans to invest about 10 billion yuan (US$1.48 billion) in robotics and help 100 brands achieve annual sales of more than 1 billion yuan (US$148 million).

The plan builds on JD.com’s earlier robotics work in logistics, including testing robot and drone deliveries during the coronavirus outbreak and large-scale work in last-mile autonomous delivery in China.

JD.com is also building robot service infrastructure, including repair and maintenance services, rather than focusing solely on sales channels.

However, the balance between platform sales, ecosystem services, and in-house products remains unclear.

The expansion comes as China is backing robotics and embodied intelligence more broadly.
