JD.com launches retail platform Joybuy in London

JD.com has launched its retail platform, Joybuy, in London as part of its international expansion. The platform is currently undergoing a soft launch with select users while merchants are being recruited.

Joybuy provides a range of products, including daily essentials, beauty items, electronics, and home goods from both domestic and international brands. It features promotions such as discounts, free shipping, and options for same-day or next-day delivery.

This launch is part of JD.com’s broader strategy for international growth, following recent organizational changes to focus on global operations. The UK’s ecommerce market is projected to reach $160 billion in 2024. This presents a significant opportunity for the company.

In recent years, JD.com has increased its international presence. In 2022, it introduced the Ochama brand in Europe, which combines online and offline shopping. It has also established warehouses in the Netherlands, Poland, and France. In 2024, it opened a 27,000-square-meter automated warehouse in Poland.

With over 100 overseas warehouses, JD.com aims to provide faster delivery options. This includes a “2-3 day delivery” framework for international customers. The launch of Joybuy in London highlights the company’s efforts to expand in global ecommerce markets.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ JD’s asset-heavy model presents a distinct alternative in the UK e-commerce landscape

JD.com’s expansion to London through Joybuy represents an interesting counterpoint to the dominant marketplace models in Western e-commerce.

While many platforms operate as third-party marketplaces, JD.com has built its business on an asset-heavy approach with direct retail sales and in-house logistics, contrasting sharply with Alibaba’s asset-light model 1.

This strategy has proven successful in China, where JD.com captured 50% of direct mobile sales market share by 2018, showcasing the viability of its approach 1.

The UK launch leverages JD’s established logistics network of over 100 overseas warehouses, enabling the company to promise same-day or next-day delivery—a capability that took years to develop in its home market 2.

This approach addresses a key concern in cross-border e-commerce: delivery reliability and speed, which could resonate with UK consumers accustomed to Amazon’s rapid fulfillment standards.

2️⃣ JD’s international strategy reveals a pattern of careful, measured expansion

The London Joybuy launch follows a consistent pattern in JD.com’s global expansion strategy that prioritizes logistics infrastructure before major market pushes.

In 2022, JD first introduced its Ochama brand to Europe, methodically establishing warehouses in the Netherlands, Poland, and France before expanding delivery services to 24 European countries—culminating in a 27,000-square-meter automated warehouse in Poland in October 2024.
