JD.com to hire 50,000 more couriers to expand 30-min delivery
JD.com plans to hire over 50,000 more full-time couriers nationwide this quarter to support the rapid growth of its on-demand delivery business, Miao Song (秒送, meaning “deliver in seconds”).
The new hires will also receive full social insurance and housing fund coverage, with all costs borne by the company.
The move is part of JD.com’s strategy to strengthen its self-operated logistics network and improve same-day delivery performance.
The Miao Song platform now connects to more than 100,000 JD-branded offline stores, enabling deliveries with an average arrival time of under 30 minutes.
JD.com’s aggressive expansion reflects intensifying competition in China’s instant delivery sector, as companies race to meet rising consumer expectations for faster and more reliable service across product categories including groceries, electronics, and personal care.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ JD.com’s massive courier investment builds on its infrastructure-first strategy
The 50,000 new courier hiring spree isn’t a sudden pivot but the continuation of JD’s longstanding infrastructure-focused approach that distinguishes it from competitors.
Since at least 2015, JD.com has prioritized controlling its own logistics network, operating 196 warehouses and 4,760 delivery stations that enabled same-day delivery for over 85% of direct sales orders even back then 1.
This vertically integrated model, where JD maintains direct control over inventory, logistics, and customer service, has been central to the company’s growth from under $0.5 billion in sales in 2009 to over $25 billion by 2015 1.
The decision to provide full benefits including social insurance and housing funds to these new couriers reinforces JD’s commitment to maintaining a directly employed delivery workforce rather than relying on contractors or third parties.
This approach stands in contrast to many delivery platforms globally that have embraced gig workers, demonstrating JD’s belief that logistics infrastructure and worker stability provide competitive advantages in service quality and reliability.
2️⃣ China’s instant delivery market undergoes massive expansion beyond food
JD’s courier expansion reflects the extraordinary growth trajectory of China’s instant delivery sector, which processed 42 billion orders in 2023 and is expected to exceed 48 billion in 2024 2.
The expanding MiaoSong service represents JD’s response to a fundamental shift in Chinese consumer behavior, as instant delivery has rapidly evolved beyond restaurant meals to encompass groceries, electronics, and daily necessities 2.
