JD.com faces EU objections over $2.5b Ceconomy bid

The European Commission has sent JD.com a statement of objections outlining concerns over its US$2.5 billion bid for German electronics retailer Ceconomy, a step that could lead to remedies before the deal is cleared.

The Commission opened an in-depth review in May under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation.

It is examining whether JD.com benefited from Chinese state support through preferential financing, tax incentives, and grants that may have helped it offer a higher price for Ceconomy.

Ceconomy operates more than 1,000 consumer electronics stores in 11 countries under the MediaMarkt and Saturn brands.

Under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation, an in-depth merger review can end with clearance, remedies, or a prohibition.

JD.com said the statement was a normal procedural step.

It also said it still expected a positive conclusion in the second half of 2026.

The Commission is due to decide by Oct. 2.
