JD.com eyes $2.6b takeover of German electronics retailer Ceconomy

Chinese ecommerce company JD.com is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Ceconomy, a German electronics retailer.

The potential deal values Ceconomy at around €2.2 billion (US$2.6 billion), with JD.com considering an offer of €4.60 (US$5.40) per share, a 23% premium over Ceconomy’s closing price of €3.75 (US$4.41).

No binding agreements have been made, and some Ceconomy shareholders remain hesitant to sell, which could affect the deal’s outcome.

Ceconomy’s shares jumped 15.5% after the news, the highest since November 2021, following earlier acquisition interest from JD.com in late 2023.

Ceconomy runs over 1,000 stores across Europe under the MediaMarkt and Saturn brands, with major shareholders including the founding Kellerhals family.

Analysts suggest that JD.com’s interest may be driven by Ceconomy’s potential as a strategic entry point into the European market.

This move could complement JD.com’s logistics capabilities.
