JD Logistics, the logistics arm of JD.com, said in Beijing that it plans to expand automation across its logistics network and retrain couriers and warehouse staff for technical roles, such as robot servicing and maintenance.

The company unveiled its industrial Wolf Robot series and said it aims to procure 3 million robots, 1 million unstaffed vehicles, and 100,000 delivery drones over the next five years.

The machines are intended to handle picking, sorting, transport, and delivery.

JD.com also said companies in its ecosystem employ about 700,000 delivery and logistics workers.

The expansion comes as China’s policy and standards framework for drones and autonomous delivery vehicles is still evolving.

Meituan has also pushed drones for logistics, including planned operations in Hong Kong.
