JD.com unveils food delivery app, review platform to rival Alibaba

JD.com has launched a stand-alone food delivery app and a new user review platform, directly challenging Meituan and Alibaba in China’s growing on-demand local services market.

The new app aims to address user complaints about difficulties ordering food via JD.com’s main shopping app.

JD.com, based in Beijing, also introduced “JD Dianping,” a review platform for restaurants, hotels, shops, tourist spots, and household services.

The review channel, available on both the main and food delivery apps, features a “JD True List” that ranks cuisine using transaction data, user ratings, and AI-generated summaries.

This move intensifies competition with Meituan’s Dazhong Dianping and follows JD.com’s initial entry into food delivery in February through its main app.

Industry analysts note that JD.com is investing in these services as growth slows in traditional ecommerce, and competition in local lifestyle services increases.

Alibaba’s Amap has also enhanced its review and ranking features using AI.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

JD’s delivery scale remains unclear amid expansion claims

  • JD Food Delivery reportedly hit 10 million daily orders and reached 166 cities by April 2025. JD has not shared merchant onboarding speed (how quickly restaurants plus local stores can start selling), delivery network capacity (available couriers plus coverage), or subsidy burn rates (cash spent to fund discounts).
  • Heavy discounts echo its earlier 百亿补贴 (10-billion-yuan subsidy) playbook. JD’s Q2 2025 adjusted net profit fell 49% year over year. Losses from new businesses tied to the delivery push add pressure on thin margins.
  • Merchants accused JD of price parity rules (forcing prices to match across platforms) with threatened fines, while JD rejected the “two-choice” label and called it proactive price matching. A penalty notice tied to Midea, a major Chinese home appliance maker, was denied by Midea, then reportedly revoked after appeal.

Cross-platform martech vendors see openings as merchants juggle reviews

  • The launch of JD Dianping adds one more review hub next to Meituan’s Dazhong Dianping and Alibaba’s Amap. Martech vendors and agencies can build a single review inbox, cross-platform ad tools, plus compliance management (ensuring promotions plus prices meet each platform’s rules) for merchants juggling rankings plus ads plus AI-generated content.
  • Investors should watch ad budgets and whether JD’s True List ranking based on transaction data, user ratings, plus AI summaries delivers more value than Meituan’s diner reviews. JD says JD Dianping will not be commercialized for now, with no paid ads or placements, which limits ad products.
