JD.com, Meituan clash sparks $13b market value loss

The dispute between China’s JD.com and Meituan has intensified. The conflict has caused a combined market value loss of US$13 billion.

Both firms accused each other of preventing delivery riders from working with rival platforms. They have also faced criticism for mistreating gig economy workers.

Analysts said the stock decline was due to investor concerns about rising spending in the competitive food delivery sector.

JD.com, founded by Richard Liu Qiangdong, and Meituan, led by Wang Xing, have overlapping operations in food delivery.

Their rivalry has been ongoing since February, when Liu promoted JD as a better partner for restaurants and delivery workers compared to Meituan.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Chinese tech rivalries follow a familiar pattern of high-stakes public confrontation

The JD.com versus Meituan conflict represents a recurring pattern in China’s tech ecosystem, where rivalries frequently escalate into public wars of words with significant financial consequences.

This mirrors previous tech conflicts like the long-running Alibaba-Tencent rivalry, where Tencent’s Pony Ma publicly criticized Alibaba’s merchant fee model to position his company as more partner-friendly 1.

The substantial market impact, $13 billion wiped from their combined valuations, demonstrates how investor sentiment in Chinese tech remains highly sensitive to competitive escalations and concerns about profit margins.

Chinese e-commerce platforms have historically used aggressive competition as a growth strategy, seen in how Pinduoduo rapidly captured market share through price wars, offering products like tissue paper at RMB 1 compared to RMB 20 on competitor platforms 2.

These high-profile disputes often serve dual purposes: they damage competitor valuations while simultaneously generating valuable brand exposure, as analyst Chen Liteng noted the JD-Meituan conflict “quickly enhanced the brand exposure” of JD.

2️⃣ Food delivery competition centers on control of gig workers in a constrained labor market

The accusations of blocking delivery riders reveal how critical workforce control has become in the food delivery sector, where logistics capabilities directly determine market position.

Ele.me’s strategy of establishing over 20,000 digital warehousing and delivery centers across China within three years 3 demonstrates the massive infrastructure investments considered necessary to compete effectively in this space.
