JD.com launches Joybuy in Europe to rival Amazon

JD.com launched Joybuy in several European markets including the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg to expand beyond China and challenge Amazon.

Joybuy’s site and app will sell categories from technology, appliances, beauty and homeware to grocery and host brand stores such as L’Oréal and Braun.

Joybuy plans same-day delivery and next-day delivery, focusing on major cities and covering more than 15 million households at launch, Matthew Nobbs, Joybuy UK managing director, said.

Joybuy will offer a JoyPlus, a low-cost subscription delivery service.

The project includes about 60 warehouses and depots across Europe and its own last-mile delivery service, and Nobbs declined to say how much JD.com has invested in the rollout.

The launch follows JD.com agreeing last year to buy German electronics retailer Ceconomy, owner of the MediaMarkt and Saturn brands, for €2.2 billion (US$2.51 billion).

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

JD.com’s European expansion leans on logistics infrastructure

  • JoyExpress is JD.com’s branded last-mile delivery service, staffed by uniformed couriers using company vehicles, including electric bicycles 1.
  • In major cities, JoyExpress also handles delivery plus installation for large home appliances 1.
  • JD.com will start by serving Joybuy, then extend JoyExpress support to partner companies, a step toward business-to-business (B2B) logistics services 1.
  • The proposed Ceconomy deal would add access to nearly 1,000 brick-and-mortar stores across Europe 2.

Europe’s e-commerce fight adds another contender

  • Shein (a fast-fashion e-commerce company) and Temu (a low-cost online marketplace) lean on cross-border shipping, while JD.com is building local warehouses plus its own delivery teams in a model similar to Amazon 3.
  • Joybuy offers same-day or next-day delivery in some major cities, putting JD.com in closer competition with Shein and Temu in Europe 4.
  • The company aims to bring 1,000 Chinese brands onto its overseas marketplace 2.
  • European competition regulators and foreign investment authorities may take a close look at a large acquisition plus new infrastructure from a major Chinese firm 5.
