JD.com debuts courier service in Saudi Arabia

JD.com has launched JoyExpress, a business-to-consumer courier service, in Saudi Arabia.

Operated by JD Logistics, the service offers same-day and next-day delivery for local ecommerce platforms and merchants.

It also provides cross-border shipping and customs clearance across most of Saudi Arabia’s 13 provinces.

JD Logistics is building a broader logistics network in the country, including warehouses, sorting centers, and delivery stations.

The launch supports JD.com’s expansion plans in the Middle East.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ JD.com’s logistics-first international expansion strategy differs from typical e-commerce approaches

JD.com’s Saudi Arabia expansion with JoyExpress demonstrates its unique approach to entering new markets by leading with logistics infrastructure rather than e-commerce marketplaces.

This strategy leverages JD’s core competitive advantage, its extensive logistics capabilities that include over 75,000 trucks and 2,200 warehouses in China 1.

The company is replicating its self-built infrastructure model in Saudi Arabia by constructing warehouses, sorting centers, and delivery stations staffed by local personnel 2.

This logistics-first approach contrasts with competitors like Alibaba, which typically enters new markets through e-commerce platforms before building logistics capabilities.

JD.com’s focus on establishing end-to-end supply chain solutions in Saudi Arabia, including cross-border shipping and customs clearance, indicates it’s positioning for long-term regional presence rather than quick market entry.

2️⃣ International expansion accelerates amid domestic market challenges

JD.com’s Saudi Arabian venture comes at a critical time when the company is actively seeking growth beyond China’s increasingly competitive e-commerce landscape.

Founder Richard Liu recently emphasized the importance of global markets for JD’s future, describing the past five years as a “period of decline” and stressing the need for innovation and new offerings 3.
