Japan’s top bank CEOs push AI to boost, not replace jobs

Top executives at Japan’s largest financial institutions addressed concerns about AI replacing jobs during a recent event.

Leaders from Mizuho Financial Group, Daiwa Securities Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, and Nomura Holdings said they expect AI to support human workers, rather than fully automate their roles.

Masahiro Kihara, CEO of Mizuho Financial Group, said humans bring skills such as empathy, dialogue, and creativity that AI lacks.

Daiwa Securities Group CEO Akihiko Ogino encouraged managers to use AI to improve decision-making and performance, emphasizing collaboration with the technology.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group CEO Hironori Kamezawa described AI as a partner and called for companies to adapt to becoming “AI native.”

Nomura Holdings CEO Kentaro Okuda said AI should handle routine tasks, allowing people to focus on more complex work, which he sees as beneficial for Japan’s aging workforce.
