🧠 Food for thought

A. Nikkei’s sharp moves follow established historical volatility patterns

Japan’s latest market swing, from an 8% plunge to a 6% rebound in just two days, fits a recurring pattern of extreme volatility that has characterized the Nikkei for decades.

The index has experienced several dramatic boom-bust cycles since reaching its all-time high of 39,957 in December 1989 during Japan’s asset price bubble1.

Following the bubble’s collapse, the Nikkei hit multiple historical lows, including 7,054 in March 2009 (representing an 81% decline from its peak)1 and 7,607 in April 20032.

This volatility pattern is evident in global markets as well, as seen in sharp recoveries following major declines, such as the December 2018 U.S. market turnaround that saw the Dow experience its largest single-day gain in history after significant losses3.

Today’s 6% rebound is particularly noteworthy as it follows an 18-month low, with the Nikkei having fallen approximately 17.58% since the beginning of 20254.

This pattern of dramatic swings highlights the index’s continued sensitivity to both domestic economic indicators and external market forces, requiring investors to consider these historical tendencies when interpreting current movements.

B. Japan-U.S. market correlation reveals strong cross-border economic ties

The Nikkei’s 6% rally following positive performance in U.S. technology stocks highlights the interconnectedness between Japanese and American markets.
