Japan’s Metaplanet buys 1,111 bitcoins, holdings reach $1.12b

Japan-based Metaplanet announced on June 23, 2025 that it has purchased 1,111 BTC at a price of US$106,408 per bitcoin.

This acquisition increases the company’s total bitcoin holdings to 11,111 BTC, valued at around US$1.12 billion at current market prices.

The company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, said that the bitcoin treasury was acquired at an average price of US$95,869 per bitcoin.

This led to a total expenditure of US$1.07 billion.

This purchase follows a milestone reached last week when Metaplanet’s holdings surpassed 10,000 BTC, exceeding its year-end target for 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Corporate bitcoin accumulation outpacing new supply

Metaplanet’s acquisition reflects a broader trend where public companies are collectively purchasing bitcoin faster than new coins are being mined.

Public companies increased their bitcoin holdings by over 320% in 2025 alone, acquiring approximately 196,000 BTC compared to only 60,044 BTC in new mining supply1.

This supply-demand imbalance is significant because more than 70 public companies now hold over $67 billion worth of bitcoin, creating competitive pressure among corporations seeking to build strategic reserves2.

Metaplanet’s aggressive accumulation strategy mirrors what Strategy Inc. (formerly MicroStrategy) pioneered, with Strategy now holding 506,137 BTC as the largest corporate holder3.

The rapid pace of corporate adoption suggests that Metaplanet’s revised targets of 30,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 210,000 BTC by 2027 are part of a race to secure limited bitcoin supply before competitors.

2️⃣ Japanese corporate adoption signals global bitcoin treasury trend

As a Japanese company, Metaplanet’s bitcoin treasury strategy represents the globalization of a trend that began primarily with U.S. corporations.

Corporate bitcoin holdings have become increasingly concentrated, with the top 10 public companies holding the vast majority of corporate bitcoin, highlighting how Metaplanet is positioning itself among an elite group of institutional holders3.
