Japan’s Metaplanet acquires 5,268 bitcoins for $623m

Metaplanet, a Japan-based bitcoin treasury firm, has bought 5,268 BTC for 91.6 billion yen (US$623 million), bringing its total holdings to 30,823 BTC.

The latest acquisition was made at about 17.4 million yen (US$118,300) per bitcoin.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich said on X that this purchase makes the company the fourth-largest publicly traded bitcoin treasury company globally, behind Strategy, MARA Holdings, and XXI.

The company reported Q3 revenue of 2.4 billion yen (US$16.5 million), up 115.7% from the previous quarter.

Last month, Metaplanet said it would raise US$1.4 billion by issuing 385 million new shares, with the funds intended for additional bitcoin purchases.

Metaplanet’s stock dropped 10.3% on September 29 in Japan and is down 38% over the past month, though it remains up 48.3% this year.
