Japan’s Metaplanet acquires 2,205 bitcoins for $238.7m

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has acquired an additional 2,205 bitcoin (BTC) for around US$238.7 million.

This purchase, disclosed on July 7, 2025, raises the firm’s total bitcoin holdings to 15,555 BTC.

According to data from Bitcointreasuries.net, Metaplanet is now the fifth-largest publicly listed corporate holder of bitcoin.

The latest acquisition was made at an average price of about US$108,237 per bitcoin, as stated by CEO Simon Gerovich on X (formerly Twitter).

In its second-quarter financial disclosure, Metaplanet reported nearly 1.1 billion yen (US$7.6 million) in revenue from its bitcoin-focused operations. This reflects a 42.4% year-over-year increase.

The firm has set a target to hold over 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027.

Metaplanet’s latest purchase is part of a broader corporate bitcoin acquisition trend that has gained significant momentum.

Public companies purchased 245,510 BTC in the first half of 2025, more than double the amount bought by ETFs during the same period, representing a 375% increase compared to the first half of 2024 1.

This is the third consecutive quarter where corporate purchases have outpaced ETF acquisitions, with public companies acquiring approximately 131,000 BTC in Q2 2025 alone, an 18% increase from previous holdings 2.

The shift from ETF investment to direct bitcoin ownership signals a strategic evolution in treasury management practices among public companies seeking to diversify their reserves.

Currently, 135 public companies hold bitcoin as a reserve asset, with MicroStrategy leading at 597,325 BTC and Metaplanet ranking fifth with its 15,555 BTC holdings 3.
