Japan’s Metaplanet acquires 1,009 bitcoins for $112m

Metaplanet bought 1,009 BTC for about US$112 million, bringing its total holdings to 20,000 BTC.

The Tokyo-based firm is now the sixth largest public company holding bitcoin, based on Bitcointreasuries.net rankings.

Metaplanet disclosed that the latest purchase was made at an average price of US$111,100 per bitcoin.

The company reached 20,000 BTC less than three months after reporting it held 10,000 BTC.

Earlier this year, Metaplanet raised its year-end target to 30,000 BTC.

Last week, Metaplanet said it plans to raise 130 billion yen (US$880 million) via an international share offering, with most of the funds intended for further bitcoin purchases.

Metaplanet’s stock dropped 2.6% on Monday morning in Japan, while markets were still open.

Bitcoin is currently trading at US$107,600, down 1.5% in the past 24 hours.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Corporate Bitcoin accumulation is creating unprecedented supply pressure

Metaplanet’s aggressive buying reflects a broader market dynamic where corporate demand far exceeds Bitcoin’s production rate.

Companies are currently purchasing Bitcoin at 1,755 BTC per day on average, while miners only produce about 450 BTC daily, meaning businesses are absorbing Bitcoin nearly four times faster than it’s being created2.

This supply-demand imbalance explains why Metaplanet could rapidly double its holdings from 10,000 to 20,000 BTC in less than three months while still finding sufficient Bitcoin to purchase at market rates.

The math highlights this trend: with over 90 publicly listed companies now holding more than 948,000 BTC collectively, corporate treasury strategies have increased Bitcoin holdings by 347% since 20223.

This institutional absorption rate suggests that companies like Metaplanet are competing in an increasingly constrained supply environment, potentially driving the urgency behind large-scale accumulation strategies.
