Japan’s ed tech market is expected to reach 362.5 billion yen (US$2.43 billion) in fiscal 2027, up 1.4 times from 2021, according to Nomura Research Institute.

This growth comes as the country faces concerns over teacher overwork, driving interest in digital tools to reduce administrative burdens.

Asfeel, a company based in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, offers an app to manage extracurricular activities, handle communication, and streamline paperwork.

The company said its app can cut supervising teachers’ administrative work by an average of 170 minutes per month.

In fiscal 2023, Japanese junior high schools spent just over 4% of their total expenses on educational activities, including commercial services, according to the education ministry.

To encourage partnerships, the industry ministry has introduced subsidies for commercial educational services and ran pilot programs at five sites in July and August.
