Japan’s AI demand projected to rise 320 times by 2030: SoftBank exec

SoftBank’s senior director Kuniyoshi Suzuki projected a 320x increase in demand for AI computing power in Japan by 2030, citing the need for local technology and infrastructure.

Suzuki made the statement on Nvidia hosted AI Day Tokyo last week, drawing over 900 participants to discuss developments in sovereign AI and related technologies.

SoftBank, GMO Internet, and KDDI presented updates on their AI infrastructure and developer tools.

The Japanese government has announced a goal to invest at least 10 trillion yen (US$65 billion) through 2030 to support the semiconductor and AI sectors.

NEC’s Kazuya Ishikawa said that industry-specific AI could help address Japan’s labor shortages and skill gaps.

Japan’s GENIAC initiative is working to strengthen the country’s generative AI ecosystem by supporting local companies and developing Japanese-language AI models.
