7-Eleven plans to pilot self-driving robot delivery carts on Tokyo’s public roads.

The service aims to help elderly customers and others with store access difficulties.

Seven & i Holdings, the parent company, awaits police approval to start test runs this month in two locations in western Tokyo.

The robots, moving at about 6 kilometers per hour, use sensors for navigation and traffic signal detection.

Customers can unlock the robots using a smartphone app when they arrive.
