Nikkei and the Asahi Shimbun, two major Japanese media groups, have filed a lawsuit against AI search engine Perplexity in Tokyo, alleging copyright infringement.

The companies claim Perplexity copied and stored their article content without permission, bypassing technical measures meant to prevent unauthorized use.

They are seeking 2.2 billion yen (US$14.7 million) in damages each, and requesting that Perplexity delete the stored articles.

Nikkei and Asahi also allege that Perplexity provided inaccurate information attributed to their reporting, which they say could harm their credibility.
