Japanese firm sees DeepSeek boosting long-term chip demand

JSR Corp., a Japanese supplier of chipmaking materials, sees the introduction of DeepSeek’s low-cost AI model as beneficial for long-term semiconductor demand.

Kenichi Emoto, an executive officer at JSR, said that while new AI technologies like DeepSeek may cause shifts, they will not drastically change JSR’s operations.

The company provides photoresists essential for extreme ultraviolet lithography machines used by major clients like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), Intel, Samsung, and ASML Holding NV.

In 2024, JSR was delisted following a government-backed takeover by Japan Investment Corp. Since then, the company has aimed to consolidate Japan’s semiconductor materials sector.

Emoto highlighted the importance of collaboration among domestic industry players to compete with rising global investment costs, though discussions have not advanced significantly.
