Japanese agritech startup Culta raises $4.5m
Japan-based agritech startup Culta raised 700 million yen (US$4.5 million), in a pre-series A round to expand its AI-based non-GMO crop breeding platform as climate change puts more pressure on agriculture.
The company said its technology can cut breeding cycles to as little as two years from more than 10 years.
Culta said it has already commercialized its strawberry varieties in Japan and Southeast Asia through a model that covers breeding, production, branding, and distribution.

- CULTA says AI-based analysis of large datasets covering genomics, phenomics (physical traits), and environmental data can cut breeding cycles from more than 10 years to about two 1.
- Drone-mounted computer vision can also accelerate field measurements. One system identified flowering traits almost nine times faster than in-field human observation 2.

- Investors are backing these tools because conventional breeding can take many years, which can lag behind drought and extreme heat. Those shocks strain the food supply for smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and the source says smallholders in LMICs produce up to 80% of the food consumed locally 3.
