Japan to approve country’s first yen-pegged stablecoin: report

Japan’s Financial Services Agency is expected to approve JPYC, a Tokyo-based fintech firm, to issue a yen-pegged stablecoin as early as this fall, according to Nikkei.

JPYC plans to register as a money transfer business with the agency by August, with a token sale anticipated shortly after.

The stablecoin will be backed by liquid assets such as bank deposits and government bonds.

JPYC aims to issue 1 trillion yen (US$6.8 billion) of the stablecoin over three years.

The company has attracted interest from several hedge funds, Nikkei reported.

Japan began regulating stablecoins in 2022, requiring issuers to be licensed banks, service providers, or trust companies.

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Japan’s second-largest bank, also announced stablecoin plans earlier this year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ International stablecoin leaders are backing Japan’s digital currency initiative

Circle, the company behind USDC (the world’s second-largest stablecoin with over $34 billion in circulation), has invested directly in JPYC1.

This backing from a major U.S. stablecoin issuer signals strong international confidence in Japan’s regulatory approach and market potential.

Circle’s involvement is particularly significant because they have extensive experience navigating stablecoin regulations across multiple jurisdictions and understand the operational complexities of maintaining stable pegs to fiat currencies.

The investment suggests that established stablecoin companies view Japan’s clear regulatory framework as a model worth supporting, potentially validating the country’s methodical approach to digital asset integration.

2️⃣ Stablecoin demand could reshape Japan’s government bond market

JPYC’s plan to issue 1 trillion yen ($6.78 billion) worth of stablecoins over three years could create substantial new demand for Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs)2.
