Japan has unveiled a new energy plan aiming for renewables like wind and solar to become the primary power source by fiscal 2040.

The goal is to have renewables contribute 40-50% of the energy mix, up from the previous 36-38% target for 2030.

The plan also allocates 30-40% to thermal power and around 20% to nuclear energy.

Despite past concerns after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, the strategy does not commit to reducing nuclear reliance. Instead, it promotes next-generation nuclear reactors alongside renewables.

The plan addresses rising electricity demand, partly driven by AI growth, while ensuring energy stability, economic growth, and lower carbon emissions.

Industry minister Muto Yoji emphasized the need to monitor global decarbonization trends, especially as fossil fuel use rises in the US.

He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while maintaining a balanced energy mix.
