Japan Post Bank to launch blockchain-based digital yen

Japan Post Bank plans to launch a digital yen by the end of fiscal 2026.

The bank, partly owned by the Japanese government and holding around 190 trillion yen (US$1.3 trillion) in deposits, said it will introduce DCJPY, a blockchain-based deposit currency developed by DeCurret DCP.

DCJPY will let customers convert yen into the digital currency for instant transactions involving digital securities and other blockchain assets.

The bank said DCJPY will be fully backed 1:1 by fiat yen and is distinct from stablecoins, which are typically pegged to fiat currencies but structured differently.

DeCurret DCP is an arm of Internet Initiative Japan. Japan Post Bank’s move reflects a broader trend among Japanese institutions using blockchain to streamline financial services.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Japan’s digital banking transformation follows a decade-long systematic buildup

Japan Post Bank’s 2026 digital yen launch represents the culmination of a methodical transition that began years ago across the Japanese financial sector.

In 2018, Internet Initiative Japan launched a virtual currency exchange backed by 18 major firms including Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and Sumitomo Mitsui 2. The following year, Mizuho Bank introduced J-Coin Pay, collaborating with 60 financial institutions to create a QR code-based digital payment platform 3.

This progression indicates that Japanese banks have been steadily building digital infrastructure rather than making abrupt shifts to blockchain technology.

Japan Post Bank’s DCJPY initiative builds on this foundation, with the bank partnering with DeCurret DCP, which is an arm of the same Internet Initiative Japan that pioneered the country’s early digital currency exchange efforts.

2️⃣ The sheer scale could make this among the world’s largest tokenized deposit launches

Japan Post Bank’s $1.29 trillion in deposits positions this digital currency launch as potentially unprecedented in scale for traditional banking 1.

The bank serves approximately 120 million customers, giving DCJPY immediate access to one of the world’s largest potential user bases for a tokenized deposit system 4.

For context, this deposit base is larger than the GDP of most countries and represents roughly one-sixth of Japan’s total banking deposits.
