Jakarta’s High Court increased Ibrahim Arief’s sentence to five years in prison on August 31 in a Chromebook procurement corruption case, up from four years.

The court also imposed a 500 million rupiah (US$28,000) fine and ordered Arief to pay 5 billion rupiah (US$280,000) in restitution.

If he does not pay within one month after the ruling becomes final, with a possible one-month extension, prosecutors can seize and auction his assets.

If Arief’s assets do not cover the amount, he will serve an additional four years in prison. Time spent under city detention will be deducted from his sentence, and the court ordered him to remain under city detention.

The appellate panel accepted appeals from prosecutors and Arief’s lawyers, and revised the Central Jakarta Corruption Court’s earlier ruling on the prison term and restitution order.

That earlier anti-graft court ruling included a dissent from two judges, who said prosecutors had not proved criminal intent, direct involvement, lobbying, or illicit gains.

Arief had previously worked under Makarim. Makarim was questioned by the Attorney General’s Office in the case.
