Italian newspaper’s AI trial a success, plans weekly feature
Italian newspaper Il Foglio’s editor, Claudio Cerasa, called the AI experiment a success, announcing that AI will now contribute to the newspaper weekly.
It will also be integrated into other areas like podcasts, newsletters, and workshops.
The experiment, called “Foglio AI,” began on March 18, 2025, and produced 22 articles on topics such as news, culture, politics, and economics.
The four-page layout featured AI-generated content, including summaries of speeches by Italian President Giorgia Meloni.
Cerasa emphasized that while AI is a useful tool, it cannot replace human journalists.
He stressed that tasks like reporting, sourcing exclusives, and observing events remain uniquely human.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI’s evolution in journalism shows remarkable acceleration over a decade
The Il Foglio experiment represents the latest stage in a rapid progression of AI integration in newsrooms that began with simple automation tasks.
In 2014, the Associated Press partnered with Automated Insights to increase their quarterly earnings report coverage from just 300 to 3,700 articles—a more than tenfold increase while maintaining accuracy 1.
This evolution continued with Bloomberg’s Cyborg system, which now generates approximately one-third of all Bloomberg News content, primarily focused on financial reporting that requires rapid data analysis 1.
The industry has moved from using AI for routine data-heavy stories to more sophisticated applications, progressing from automated earnings reports to weather updates, sports recaps, and now Il Foglio’s experiment with opinion and cultural content generation.
While Il Foglio’s approach is novel, the World Economic Forum noted as far back as 2018 that by 2033, AI could potentially write up to 90% of articles, showing how this trend has been anticipated but is accelerating faster than many expected 2.
2️⃣ News organizations face an existential economic imperative to adopt AI
The media industry’s difficult economic realities make AI adoption increasingly necessary rather than optional for many publications.
