Israeli unicorn Firebolt cuts jobs, pivots to AI efficiency

Firebolt, a data warehouse company, has laid off dozens of employees in Israel and abroad, leaving only a small team of developers in Israel and the US.

The company, which reportedly holds over US$100 million in cash, cited a shift in strategy to improve efficiency amid changes in AI technology. Last year, Firebolt’s founders, Eldad Farkash and Saar Bitner, announced their intention to step down from management roles.

The layoffs come despite the company’s significant cash reserves and recent funding rounds.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Firebolt’s growth leaned on a small customer list

  • Firebolt reached a $1.4 billion valuation in 2022, while betting on a tightly focused plan 1.
  • By late 2024, it brought in $40.4 million in revenue from 12 customers 2.
  • That scale suggests big deals per account, which fits its aim to serve demanding analytic workloads plus real-time and back-end data applications 1.
  • Headcount grew to 200 employees by early 2022, which raised fixed costs tied to a small and higher-risk client roster 1.

A tougher market for venture-backed challengers

  • In 2021 and 2022, venture capital often backed specialist startups meant to take on incumbents like Snowflake with niche, high-performance features 3.
  • The approach can break down when large players catch up. Google’s BigQuery (Google Cloud’s data warehouse) uses AI to optimize queries, which can shrink the edge startups count on 4.
  • The layoffs add to the case that a narrow technical edge can be hard to turn into a standalone business.
  • As platforms broaden, specialized rivals may need an acquisition or a pivot before cash reserves run out.
