🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
New York’s Israeli startup boom lacks baseline context
- A 2024 count lists 648 Israeli-founded firms in New York State, while a 2018 study found 506 1. That implies 28% growth, yet neither source defines ‘Israeli-founded’ (founder citizenship? incorporation? headquarters?) or splits growth by sector.
- From 2016 to 2018, revenue at Israeli-founded businesses grew 9.5% a year, over twice New York State’s 4.2% rate 1. No 2019 to 2024 trends appear, so the jump in unicorns from five to 20 (private startups valued at 1 billion or more) might be momentum or a pandemic-era blip.
- The $19.5 billion output lacks a comparison to New York State gross domestic product (GDP). Readers cannot tell if Israeli firms gained share or just tracked the state economy.
Relocation advisors can capture Israeli firms’ New York expansion wave
- Relocation advisors, staffing agencies, and cost-optimization consultants can pursue about 140 additional Israeli-founded companies since 2018 1. Offer bundles with real estate scouting, hires through Workforce1 2 (New York City’s public employment service network), plus guidance on the state’s Excelsior Jobs Program 3 (a performance-based tax credit on wages and Research and Development (R&D) spending).
- Investors plus tax and location-strategy consultants can map incentives to cut costs. Use Qualified Emerging Technology Company (QETC) certification for 9 to 18% refundable tax credits on eligible costs, including Research and Development (R&D) 4. Add START-UP NY a state program that creates 10 year tax free zones with participating academic institutions, which closes to new applicants after December 31, 2025 5.
