Israeli delivery firm Haat raises $20m to expand in Tel Aviv

Israel-based food delivery startup Haat has raised US$20 million at a post-money valuation of roughly US$100 million as it prepares to expand in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

Israel Post led the round with about US$14 million, while food importer Lehman Schlissel invested about US$5 million, and the two investors bought around 20% of the company.

Founded five years ago by Hasan Abasi, Haat first focused on Arab communities in Israel before expanding to more cities.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Haat’s technology was forged in markets its rivals ignored

  • Haat built its edge in Israeli Arab communities, where it tackled delivery hurdles Wolt had not solved, including customers without formal street addresses or credit cards 1.
  • It created proprietary AI/ML technology (software that learns patterns from data) that maps these “infrastructure-less” cities by learning from courier routes, which helps it run smoothly when standard GPS-based navigation breaks down 2.
  • Israel Post’s investment matters because Haat plans a partnership with Israel Post to bring packages to customers’ homes, which could give it a nationwide logistics backbone 3.

The funding signals a broader delivery market war is brewing in Israel

  • Haat is moving into the Tel Aviv metropolitan area as market leader Wolt faces tougher oversight, including a NIS 8.5 million payment in 2023 over anticompetitive promotion of restaurants that worked exclusively with its service 4.
  • Authorities have moved to block renewal of an exemption tied to Wolt Market (Wolt’s grocery delivery service), raising the chance Wolt may need to sell Wolt Market if it fails to meet renewal conditions 5.
  • The added pressure has opened a “window of opportunity” that is drawing new competitors 6.
  • Uber Eats (Uber’s food-delivery service) is gearing up for a price-driven entry into Israel, which could set up a three-way fight among Wolt, local challenger Haat, and a global entrant 6.
