Israeli cybersecurity firm Pentera cuts jobs, doubles down on AI

Israeli cybersecurity firm Pentera is cutting about 40 jobs or less than 10% of its 470 staff.

The layoffs are focused on marketing and headquarters roles.

Pentera said the move is part of a reorganization to shift more resources to product development and AI.

The company also said it is still hiring for product engineering and AI roles.

The company raised US$60 million in March 2025 in a series D round that brought total funding to about US$250 million.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Layoffs came after a revenue milestone in a crowded market

  • Pentera said it was the first adversarial exposure validation (AEV) company, software that tests how well an organization can withstand real-world cyberattacks, to pass US$100 million in annual recurring revenue 1.
  • The company has pushed further into AI since its 2025 launch of native AI features. Those tools include AI-powered reporting. They also include web attack testing with adaptive payload generation, which creates and adjusts simulated attack code to probe for weaknesses 1.
  • Pentera sells automated penetration testing tools, software that simulates cyberattacks to find security gaps, in a busy market. A Picus Security post lists Cymulate, AttackIQ, SafeBreach, XM Cyber, Horizon3, plus Pentera among Cymulate alternatives, while another industry list names dozens of options in autonomous pentesting 2, 3.

Pentera is moving spending toward product work and automation

  • The reorganization shifts resources away from marketing and headquarters roles toward product development plus AI. Pentera also says it is still hiring for product engineering and AI roles.
  • Cybersecurity vendors increasingly sell AI-powered or autonomous pentesting tools. That puts more pressure on companies to compete on technical depth, with less room for marketing claims 3, 4.
  • Some vendors say AI-enabled pentesting can cut testing costs by more than 50% in some cases. They also say the tools can replace human pentesters for some use cases, though those claims come from a vendor blog and have not been independently verified 4.
