IPhone shipments up 10% as tariff fears rise
Apple Inc. reported a 10% increase in iPhone shipments in the first quarter of 2025, totaling 57.9 million units, according to data from industry tracker IDC.
This is an increase from 52.6 million units shipped during the same period last year.
The growth is mainly attributed to inventory stockpiling to address potential tariffs on Chinese exports to the United States.
This strategy is in place rather than a significant rise in consumer demand, IDC stated.
Apple and other tech companies have increased their inventory in the US to mitigate the financial impact of tariffs previously introduced by the Trump administration.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Apple’s years-long China diversification strategy is finally bearing fruit
Apple’s recent surge in shipments reflects an acceleration of a long-running strategy to reduce China dependency that began years before the current tariff situation.
India has emerged as Apple’s primary manufacturing alternative, now producing $22 billion worth of iPhones and accounting for nearly 20% of Apple’s global iPhone output, a significant increase from almost zero just five years ago 1.
The company exported approximately $17.4 billion worth of iPhones from India in the fiscal year ending March 2025, demonstrating the substantial scale of this manufacturing shift 2.
This diversification wasn’t built overnight. It required years of groundwork with manufacturing partners and government incentives, including India’s $2.7 billion production-linked incentive scheme that helped attract Apple’s manufacturing ecosystem 2.
Apple’s strategic adjustment provides flexibility in navigating geopolitical tensions, with Chinese exports facing potential 54% tariffs compared to India’s 26%—a substantial competitive advantage that justifies the years of investment in alternative production 3.
The broader electronics industry is watching this transformation closely, as Apple’s supply chain decisions often influence other tech manufacturers when balancing manufacturing costs, quality control, and geopolitical risks.
2️⃣ Strategic inventory stockpiling has become a critical tariff management tool
The 10% increase in iPhone shipments demonstrates how inventory management has evolved from traditional seasonal planning to a strategic defense against geopolitical trade uncertainty.
