IPhone Air sees muted reception in China

Apple’s iPhone Air launched in China on October 22, 2025 receiving a quieter response compared to earlier iPhone releases.

The device, priced at 7,999 yuan (US$1,100), uses only eSIM connectivity, a feature that has seen slow adoption among Chinese carriers.

On launch day in Beijing and Shanghai, there were no significant lines for the iPhone Air, and most shoppers were focused on picking up iPhone 17 Pro models.

Some color options of the iPhone Air sold out by mid-morning, but the device was generally available for immediate purchase.

Apple recently reported sales growth in China after seven quarters of declining revenue.

The company faces competition from local brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and recent flagship launches from Vivo and Honor.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

China trails iPhone Air on eSIM readiness

  • The iPhone Air arrived in China without a SIM tray, which puts carrier readiness at the center of uptake.
  • China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom received commercial eSIM trial approval only on October 13, 2025, nine days before the October 22 launch 1. China Unicom posted an eSIM service page in July 2025 after a two-year suspension, with telecom fraud cited for the pause 21.
  • eSIM smartphone shipments in China may reach 17 million in 2026, a small slice of the market 2. Many phones still lack eSIM support, so networks and retail activation lag the US where iPhones went eSIM only in 2022 31.
  • Early sales look muted as infrastructure stumbles surface. Reports cite regulatory limits, clunky activation, and trials that are still underway 4.

MVNOs and retail chains need simple eSIM activation

  • Shipments could climb from 17 million in 2026 to 125 million by 2030 2. That wave will require smooth activation as people port numbers without physical SIM card workflows that stores rely on.
  • SaaS vendors that handle electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC), QR code issuance, or number porting APIs can serve Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) brands and big retail chains that onboard customers remotely. China Unicom leads on eSIM standards and interoperability, so early partnerships help vendors build compliant activation tools 2.
  • Fintech companies may explore embedded eSIM provisioning during mobile payment app onboarding.
