Intel, Tata to collaborate on semiconductor manufacturing in India
Tata Group and Intel have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore collaboration on semiconductor manufacturing and packaging in India.
Tata Electronics, part of the India-based Tata Group, and Intel plan to consider manufacturing and packaging Intel products at Tata’s upcoming semiconductor and assembly facilities.
The companies will also look into advanced packaging and developing AI-focused PC solutions for India’s consumer and enterprise markets.
India is projected to become a top five global PC market by 2030.
The potential partnership aims to support India’s semiconductor supply chain and expand local production capabilities.
No financial terms or specific project timelines were disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tata timelines push wafer work past 2026 while packaging may come first
- The Dholera fab expects its first chip by late 2026 1. Intel wafer work would follow after 2026 once the plant proves volume output.
- Initial runs use 28 nm 1 with focus on analog and logic integrated circuits (ICs) 2. That aligns with targeted parts rather than high-end CPUs.
- The Assam packaging site targets high volume in H2 2025 3. New client packages usually need extra qualification after the ramp.
- Planned capacity is 50,000 wafer starts a month 1. The group must split that across customers. Units include Tata Motors, its automotive arm, and Tata Teleservices, its telecommunications provider 3. Early slots could be tight.
Software vendors and system integrators (IT services firms that design and deploy hardware and software) can move on India’s AI PC wave before local builds
- India shipped a record 4.9 million PCs in Q3 2025 4. AI notebooks grew 126.5% year over year, so rollout can start now regardless of chip origin.
- ISVs can build India-focused AI apps and tuning tools today. That sets a base before any local Intel-Tata output in 2027-2028.
- The commercial slice grew 11.4% with faster refresh cycles 4. MSPs can bundle AI PC rollout, training, and support for SMBs and enterprises.
- Channel partners can pursue priority deals with HP at 26.6% share and Lenovo at 18% 4. Priority rights on AI PC distribution can stick before local manufacturing news draws more rivals.
